OLE Experience in Practice (OEP)
There are many existing courses that carry OEP. These can be found in the Class & Lab Schedule. Please note the following additional options for earning OEP.
Credit-bearing options:
- Students registered for a credit-bearing academic internship will be asked to provide a rationale through their Experience request in Handshake as to how their 1.00-, 0.50- or 0.25-credit academic internship fulfills the Intended Learning Outcomes of OLE Experience in Practice. Upon completion of the internship, the OEP will display as completed in DegreePath once a grade of “Pass” (P) has been entered.
- Students registered for semester-length study away/abroad programs led by St Olaf faculty are likely to receive OEP credit from one of the program courses.
- Students registered for semester- or year-long study away/abroad programs not led by St Olaf faculty can fulfill OEP via one of the following two options:
- By completion of a 0.25 credit reflection seminar led by St. Olaf faculty (ID296)
- By completion of an OEP-relevant course that already exists as a standard part of the off-campus study program (see Smith Center for programs that offer OEP as part of their established courses).
- Students requesting the OLE Experience in Practice (OEP) attribute for an independent study (IS) or independent research (IR) experience need to indicate this on their IS or IR application. Along with indicating your intention to pursue OEP credit in the appropriate text box provided on the form, the student will also need to attach a rationale as to how the IS or IR fulfills the Intended Learning Outcomes of OLE Experience in Practice. As has been current practice, faculty supervisors and chairs review the student form and rationale to approve the independent project. Faculty supervisors will further affirm in the provided checkbox whether they agree to conduct the IS or IR as an OEP experience.
Non-credit-bearing program options (certification requirements will vary by program):
- Chinese and Japanese Language Tutors
- Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry
- Latin and Greek Play Participants
- Magnus the Good Fellowship
- Mayo Innovation Scholars
- St. Olaf Messenger
- Steen Fellowship
- Supplemental Instruction Tutors
- Writing Desk Tutors
For all of the above, the respective director will certify successful participation in the program (requirements will vary by program), at which point the OEP attribute is then awarded via “OLE Experience in Practice” (ID 300), an ungraded 0-credit course that will be used to note successful completion of the OEP requirement.
- OEP Petitions: Students hoping to complete OEP in circumstances other than the above can petition to have it granted to them. The petition form for non-credit-bearing OEP is available here and should be used as a guideline prior to your experience and submitted to the Registrar’s Office shortly after your experience for consideration. Using the questions on the form, you should be able to explain how you believe your experience fulfills the Intended Learning Outcomes for OEP. Petitions for relevant experiences both on and off campus will be considered.
