Crime Prevention Strategies
Strategies to prevent becoming a crime victim are the same everywhere. Students studying abroad/away should be vigilant to ensure their own safety like they would in all instances by remembering the following acronym GLLADT:
- Give up all valuables and do not resist attackers if confronted in a robbery. Resistance can escalate to violence and result in injury or death.
- Limit travel at night, vary routine travel habits, and travel with a companion.
- Lock all windows and doors.
- Avoid accommodations on the ground floor or immediately next to the stairs.
- Do not wear expensive clothing or accessories.
- Take only recommended, safe modes of local transportation.
Crime victims are advised to contact the local authorities and nearest US embassy for support. The Department of State can help replace stolen passports, contact family and friends, identify health care providers, explain the local criminal justice process, and connect victims of crime with available resources.
