Logistical Considerations While Abroad/Away

However, this information can be helpful for those who are planning ahead and looking at aspects of program planning. Here you will find highlights about what to prepare before you start your program! You can find things from cell phone communication to tips from other Ole’s who have gone abroad! No need to feel like you’re in it by yourself!

It is important to understand that when leaving the US not all phone carriers work while being abroad, therefore, having a plan and knowledge about your mobile network will benefit you as you prepare to leave
1. Make sure to visit your phone company to see if you are eligible for international service while you are out of the country. Some of the mobile companies don’t have that feature, so knowing in advance will help you prepare for how to establish connection when you arrive to your destination
2. Some programs during orientation will give you a talk about how to get an international sim card that can be purchased and paid for while you’re studying there. It is important to take note that your service provider might not extend to that region so having a good set of communication is something that would be most beneficial!

Going aboard means many things: getting lost, trying new foods, seeing new things, finding new friends! However, there are still many things that you may not know about and will encounter that may make you feel startled or pushed out of your comfort zone. That is why it’s important to have at least some basic knowledge of the country and the culture it has even prior to arriving!

Things you can considered before going to your study destination are:

What are some of the traditions that are held in this country?
What are some of the famous dishes that are enjoyed from the citizens of that country?
What will the temperature look like? Is it always summer weather? Or will it be cold like Minnesota winters?
What is the native language that is spoken in the country? Do they speak English or another language that you are familiar with?
Do they use trains or public transportation on a daily basis?
What is the currency that you will be using?
What is the time difference between home and your study abroad program?

Having some good standing of what to expect can help you feel a bit more comfortable about being there and be able to enjoy your time to the max!
