The Smith Center offers ID 296, the Global Engagement Seminar, each semester for students who are studying abroad/away for the semester or academic year. The course is concurrently, students must be participating in a program when they are enrolled for this course. This course:
- Fulfills the Ole Experience in Practice OLE Core requirement.
- This .25 online course supports the curriculum of study abroad/away semester or year-long programs with Smith Center approved providers. It is not intended for students on St. Olaf faculty-led semester programs.
Students will read articles and chapters exploring intercultural communication, the intercultural praxis model, globalization, and identity. Students will reflect on their experiences on their study abroad/away programs, discuss global systems that connect learnings and engage in discussions of identity across borders.
All work will be done asynchronously, allowing students to complete their reflections at their own pace and in their own time. Assignments will primarily be written essays and reflections, although there is flexibility in format.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- understand and engage with theories and practices of intercultural communication and relate them to your study abroad/away program
- reflect on your identity and positionality, both within the United States and on-site during their study abroad/away program, and how this shapes their experiences, values, and attitudes
- explore communication practices in multiple contexts through difference cultural lens
- develop intercultural understanding when engaging with diverse perspectives
- explore globalization and how your experiences abroad/away are interconnected and how events, movements and topics cross and re-cross borders
Evaluation and Grading:
- Pass/No Pass
Evaluation of assignments:
- Demonstrated engagement with class prompts and themes, depth of reflection, connection to student experience
- All assignments directly reference class readings and literature and demonstrate analysis
- Meet the assignment guideline expectations and are submitted by the deadline
