It is important to work with the St. Olaf Financial Aid Office to achieve the best possible financing for your study abroad/away program. Your federal, state and institutional grants, scholarships and loans may be used for St. Olaf study abroad/away semester and year programs. You may revise your yearly financial aid request to reflect the additional cost of abroad/away programs. Extra loans, such as the SELF loan are also available.
How to Find the Cost of a Program
All Smith Center study abroad/away programs have varying costs. Each program webpage contains a Budget Sheet that is updated each year to reflect the costs for each specific term. This includes estimated transportation, housing, meals, and other anticipated travel costs. Watch this video to learn more about how to find the Budget Sheet for each program.
How Financial Aid is Used for Study Abroad/Away
- Financial Aid first goes towards any accumulated charges on the St. Olaf student account (tuition, study abroad/away program fee, health insurance, parking tickets, miscellaneous charges, etc.)
- If a credit remains on the student account, students may place an “Account Refund Request” through SIS to have direct access to the available funding for use while studying abroad/away.
Study Abroad/Away Scholarships
All St. Olaf applicants are automatically considered for Smith Center study abroad/away scholarship. In addition to automatic scholarships, students may also be eligible for scholarships offered by St. Olaf College, their study abroad/away program, and other external scholarship providers that require applications.
Students who do not attend St. Olaf College should seek financial aid through their home institutions. St. Olaf provides financial aid only to those students who have been formally admitted and intend to graduate from St. Olaf.
