Looking for summer internship or research experiences? Interested in learning more about St. Olaf’s McNair Program? Thinking about graduate school?
St. Olaf College currently supports two National Science Foundation scholarship programs in science, technology, engineering and math (NSF S-STEM). DataSTEM focuses on students interested in augmenting their STEM majors with advanced capacities in data science and statistics. EMERGE focuses on involving biology and/or chemistry majors in early research experiences with faculty. Both programs welcome academically talented students with demonstrated financial need to apply during their first or second year. In addition to scholarship support, scholars are encouraged to participate in diverse activities including dinners with faculty and other scholars, field trips, workshops, as well as graduate school and career advising sessions.
On a very snowy day (December 9, 2019), five of our eight dataSTEM students and two faculty made our way south to visit Mayo Clinic: Matt Richey, Ian Roback, Faith Opakunle, Mai Yer Moua, Cha Lor, Sharon Lane-Getaz (and not pictured: Liban Jama). The day was packed with presentations about research projects in the department headed by Dr. Felicity Enders, Professor of Health Sciences Research, Biostatistics and Informatics. The topics ranged from cancer research to publicly available online data stores.
