Council on Equity and Inclusion seeks input on vision statement

The St. Olaf College Council on Equity and Inclusion is seeking input as it works to develop a vision statement.

The council invites all members of the St. Olaf community — students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents — to share thoughts and ideas for creating a more equitable and inclusive community through an online form on the Equity and Inclusion web page. Thoughts should be submitted by February 20.

This input will inform the vision statement that the council will use to frame a strategic plan for equity and inclusion at St. Olaf.

“A vision statement is what breathes life into a strategic plan,” says Provost and Dean of the College Marci Sortor, who is chairing the council. “It guides the tactics that we pursue to implement the plan. Long after the goals are met, the vision should continue to shape our college community.”

The council was founded in 2018 to assist in the development and monitoring of the college’s strategic equity and inclusion plans and metrics, advise the administration on the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Working Group on Equity and Inclusion’s report, connect disparate efforts across campus, and to serve as a resource for academic and administrative departments.

The council’s 10 members meet monthly to advance their work and seek insight from campus stakeholders.

“We’ve already begun asking the people who meet with us to give us their thoughts on the vision, and we’ll continue to ask that question in our listening sessions and other meetings,” Sortor says. “We want to hear from the full St. Olaf community regarding our vision statement, so we encourage everyone to take a few minutes to offer their input.”
