Just-in-Time Teaching
A workshop for faculty interested in exploring Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) for use in their courses.
August 21-22, 2003
Rolvaag 477
Coordinated by Rick Goedde (Economics and Management Studies)
JiTT is a teaching strategy that uses Web-based technologies to provide instructors with regular and timely information about their students’ learning and which actively engages them in the course material. Based on information received from students prior to each class period, both teachers and students can focus their efforts, spending more time on areas where students appear less confident and less time where they have demonstrated competence. A small number of St. Olaf faculty, some of whom will assist with this workshop, have experimented with JiTT during the past year, and have reported very positive outcomes. Additional information about JiTT can be found at http://webphysics.iupui.edu/jitt/jitt.html.
The workshop will introduce participants to Just-in-Time Teaching, and provide basic instruction for implementing JiTT at St. Olaf. Matt Richey (Mathematics) will discuss his experiences this past semester using JiTT and Maple TA. Dan Beach (IIT) will provide an overview of WebCT (currently the principle vehicle for implementing JiTT at St. Olaf). Participants will work together to begin to design course-based exercises for implementing JiTT in courses of their choosing. Our goal is that the faculty completing the workshop will be able to introduce JiTT in one or more of their classes this fall.
All participants will receive a copy of the book Just-in-Time Teaching: Blending Active Learning with Web Technology. Handouts will be provided that describe the basic operations covered during the workshop. All participants completing the workshop will receive a stipend of $150.
