Friday, May 24

Early Housing Check-In

Ellingson Hall, 5 – 10 p.m.

Families traveling from afar may wish to spend Friday night in the residence halls. An early housing check-in location will be provided at Ellingson Hall. If your family and friends will arrive in the late evening, please have your graduating senior check in at Ellingson Hall on their behalf.  Please note that if you need housing prior to May 24th, it is necessary to make off-campus arrangements.

Registration and Check-In

Buntrock Commons, Crossroads, 12 – 8:30 p.m.

Celebration Concert with the St. Olaf Band, St. Olaf Choir, and St. Olaf Orchestra

Skoglund Auditorium, 2 – 4:30 p.m.

This combined concert provides an opportunity to celebrate the musical talents of the St. Olaf Band, St. Olaf Choir, and St. Olaf Orchestra, as well as the outgoing seniors in those ensembles. This event is free and open to the public.

Graduation Gala

Buntrock Commons, 6 – 8:30 p.m.

Graduating seniors and their guests are invited to this special celebration that offers a taste of St. Olaf’s most beloved food.  The Graduation Gala will be held throughout Buntrock Commons.  Come when you can, leave when you must.  Food and beverages will be served from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

This event is a strolling dinner reception with different food and beverages served throughout the building.  Since seating is limited, we will have bite-sized and grab-and-go items that will be easy to nosh as you mingle and socialize.  Tickets ($35 each) are required for all guests, including graduating and current students. Ole Cards are not valid for this meal.

Illumination Ceremony

Mellby Lawn, 9:15 p.m.

This ceremony honors the graduates as they transition from life as a student to becoming a member of the St. Olaf alumni community. The class lanterns will be placed on the Campus Green on Saturday and students are encouraged to locate their personalized lantern sometime during the day, leaving them in place until after the brief ceremony at 9:15 p.m.  At the end of the evening, students may take their lantern home as a remembrance of their time on the Hill.

Baccalaureate

Skoglund Auditorium, 9 – 10 a.m.

Graduating seniors and their families and friends are invited to gather to worship and give thanks to God for the life and the community that was shared by the graduating class. This capstone worship service is led by the college pastors and will feature the St. Olaf Band and the St. Olaf Choir.  The decision to hold Commencement on the Campus Green or inside Skoglund will be announced during Baccalaureate.

Brunch

Buntrock Commons, Stav Hall, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Enjoy brunch with family, friends, and students. Tickets (Adults – $13, Children 6-12 years old – $7) are required and may be purchased at the registration desk located in the Crossroads in Buntrock Commons. There is no charge for graduating seniors or current students with an active meal plan.  Please note that active meal plans for current students who are not graduating seniors end on Wednesday, May 22 unless those students are employed to work the Commencement and Reunion Weekends.  If your current student (non-senior) is planning to attend this brunch and is not under an active meal plan, please select “Adult” when registering this student for brunch.

Academic Department Receptions

Locations TBD, 12 – 2 p.m.

Graduating seniors and their guests are invited to attend academic department receptions at various locations across campus. A complete list of reception locations will be available at the registration desk on the first floor of Buntrock Commons.

Tostrud Center, lower level, 2 p.m.

Graduating seniors should arrive promptly in cap and gown with tassel in order to rehearse the Commencement Ceremony.

Commencement Ceremony

Campus Green (outdoor) or Skoglund (indoor), 3 p.m.

Commencement is scheduled to be outdoors on the Campus Green between Mellby and Tomson halls; no tickets are required for general seating at this location.

In the event of severe weather or major safety hazards, Commencement will be held in Skoglund Center Auditorium and tickets will be required. Each senior participating in the graduation ceremony is eligible for three tickets.  Graduates  must select tickets online between March 18 and April 26.  Students may leave Commencement tickets at the Information Desk in Buntrock Commons if they will not see family members before the Ceremony.  A step-by-step guide is available here for ordering tickets online.

Accessible seating including sign language interpreting is available on the Campus Green and in Skoglund Center Auditorium.  Tickets are required for this section whether the ceremony is indoors or outside.  Please contact the Events Management Office at 507-786-3811 or commencement@stolaf.edu to acquire tickets in this section or with any questions regarding accommodations.

The decision to hold Commencement on the Campus Green or inside Skoglund will be announced during Baccalaureate. If the ceremony will take place inside, the news will be posted in Buntrock Commons, on the college website, and available at 507-786-2222.

Inside or outside, the ceremony will be broadcast at various indoor locations on campus. No tickets are required at these broadcast locations. We encourage families with elderly guests or small children to take advantage of the air- conditioned simulcast locations.

Bookstore

The St. Olaf Bookstore — offering clothing, general reading books, and gift items — is open extended hours during the weekend:

The Cage

Located on the Second floor of Buntrock Commons, the Cage offers short-order meals, snacks, beverages, and baked goods.  The Cage is closed on Memorial Day.
