Violence Against the AAPI Community

Dear St. Olaf Community,

The violent acts in Atlanta last night are deeply painful and remind us of the continuous violence against Black, Indigenous, and people of color. This violent incident is not isolated and it adds to the hate crimes that have risen by 150% against the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities this last year (California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and VOA, 2020). As a College and in living our mission, we denounce racism, discrimination, and bigotry of all kinds.

As we continue this work of becoming a more inclusive St. Olaf, it is important that we rally around each other during difficult times. Create spaces to allow the pain and emotions to flow how they need flow. Take the time to listen and support each other. There is nothing more powerful than a community that stands together against hate.

Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander Oles I am so sorry that you have to continue to balance your regular academic work, personal responsibilities, and still figure how to navigate these scary and frightening times. I see you and we are here for you. If you need support, please reach out. Below are some resources:

This has been a difficult year and we have a lot more work to do. I call on everyone to lean in to kindness and compassion. If there is anything I can do to more fully support you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you to the departments and offices who have stood in solidarity with our AAPI communities. See below to read statements and postings across our community.
