Studying abroad/away can impose many benefits and unique challenges for your gender identity. Expectations, health, policies, and opportunities can differ country to country based on your gender identity. It is important to research the communities in which you will be in order to understand cultural differences on gender identities. Talk with the Smith Center, Taylor Center for Equity and Inclusion, your provider, and your support network to help you explore your options. There are many religious and cultural differences that can be impactful while traveling or studying abroad/away. Please use the links and websites below to assist in preparing for your time abroad/away.
Research your destination. Know what to expect in terms of religious or cultural traditions and gender norms for the host community.
- What are the cultural norms in terms of dating, sex, friendships, etc.? Is it acceptable for women to express their feelings openly?
- What are the typical gender roles in that country?
- Will I be comfortable in a location where gender roles are very different from what I am used to in the U.S.?
- What are the cultural expectations for both men and women?
- Are there any stereotypes about my gender from the U.S.? What are they?
- How do my personal values compare to that country’s attitudes towards those with my gender identity?
- If gender inequality is the norm, how will I feel?
- Review emergency procedures and learn about safety practices such as traveling in pairs or groups, and dressing in a culturally appropriate way.
- What is considered sexual harassment in that country? Educating yourself about sexual harassment is integral to maintaining your sense of safety. While harassment may be more difficult to understand abroad because of different cultural norms, cultural sensitivity does not mean you should accept behaviors that make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
Be thoughtful about packing.
- What items do you need while on your program?
- If you are very particular about your feminine hygiene products, will you be able to find them in that country?
- If you are using any kind of birth control find out if you will be able to get it in that country, or plan on bringing enough to last through your entire stay.
- Are there areas of the host community (country or city) that have travel restrictions/you should avoid?
- What does gender health look like in the host community?
- If you need medical attention, what are your options?
- What do STD prevention, birth control, and safe sex practices look like in the host community?
- How is utilizing these services or sex outside of marriage perceived in the host community?
- If you experience cat-calling, harassment, sexual misconduct/assault, abuse, or other forms of gender-based discrimination or crimes, how do you report them locally and back to campus, if you want to report them? Remember that crime definitions and reporting processes can vary by country. Be aware of what options you may have in your host country.
