Jeff Sauve, former longtime college archivist wrote the text for this book. In the foreword he writes:

“With a century of material available, interesting stories emerged: acting animals like Deacon the dog and Punk the cat; innovations like radio broadcasting Shakespeare’s As You Like It in 1922; and creating the Old Fortune Theatre set, originally built by Edward Alleyn in 1600.

Other stories include former students like Walter R. Fleishmann ’35 and Barry Morrow ’89 who made names for themselves in Hollywood. Faculty pioneers like George Weida Spohn, Elizabeth Walsingham Kelsey, Patrick Quade and (Ralph) Haugen grace this book with their unique contributions to the development of dramatics at St. Olaf.

Working on St. Olaf Theater: A Centennial Celebration 1921-2021 has given me much joy in sleuthing out the details, learning in-depth the stories behind the productions, and hearing first hand from alumni, faculty, and staff who cherish their experiences with St. Olaf Theater.”
