St. Olaf College encourages eligible students to vote in every election. Our next election in Minnesota is the Primary Election on August 11. Primary elections are elections that help decide the candidates who will appear on the ballot for the November general election. Primary elections begin in the spring and run through the summer. Each state selects when the Primaries will take place and whether they are open to all voters or closed (only available to voters who have registered with a political party).
In general, there are two main criteria to register to vote:
- Voters must be a U.S. citizen
- Voters must be a least 18 years old on Election Day
There are a few other things to consider if you want to vote in the Primary elections:
- Where you consider home (permanent address or college address)
- The method of voting (in-person, absentee/mail in)
Select the option below that aligns best with your voting intentions to learn how to ensure you are properly registered to vote and about your voting options.
If you are voting in another state’s primary, please check your home state’s Secretary of State’s website for details on registration and deadlines. If you have any questions please email vote@stolaf.edu
