Two faculty members in the Department of Art and Art History participated in the College Art Association Annual Conference. Courtney M. Leonard was invited to present her project BREACH as part of the panel Climate Déjà Vu and Indigenous Ecological Futures. Hannah Ryan co-organized a panel with Lesley Wolff (Texas Tech), Nourish and Resist: Food and Transatlantic Feminisms in Contemporary Caribbean Art, bringing together an inspiring group of women-identifying artists and art historians: Shana Klein, Tashima Thomas, Maria Elena Ortiz, Cristina Maria Molina, and Vanessa Renae Centeno.
Courtney M. Leonard is a Shinnecock artist and filmmaker, whose work explores marine biology, Indigenous food sovereignty, migration, and human environmental impact. Leonard’s current projects articulate the multiple definitions of the term breach and investigate and document Indigenous communities’ historical ties to water, marine life, and native cultures of subsistence. Hannah Ryan is an intersectional feminist and decolonial art historian who teaches modern and contemporary art at St. Olaf.
