We present at conferences on and off campus.
We have presented at St. Olaf’s Inclusive Excellence Summit each of the last three years. At this event we share our work around a cohesive theme that we have chosen to guide us in our efforts. In our first year our theme was “Sharing STEM Voices.” In that year we created the structures necessary to ensure student voices were being heard and shared. Last year’s theme focused on “Redefining STEM Culture.” This year we have focused on “Identifying and Implementing Strategies to Create an Inclusive STEM Future” a focus that was prompted by faculty feedback. This year’s presentation addresses our current efforts to evaluate our work to ensure that the structures we have created and the efforts we have been involved in are sustainable. We will also review new efforts to identify and implement specific strategies to create a more inclusive STEM future at the college.
In the fall of 2023, we presented and engaged with an audience of educators and researchers from around the country at the American Association of Colleges and Universities “Transforming STEM” Conference in Washington D.C. The title of our presentation was “Nothing About Us Without Us: The role of a STEM student action team in welcoming student voices into DEI efforts.“
We communicate with faculty, Department Chairs and our Dean.
We meet each semester with the Natural Science and Math Associate Dean and Department Chairs to directly communicate what events are coming up and the initiatives we have planned. Student Action Team Department Representatives also may attend department faculty meetings to provide updates.
We collect the feedback we receive at our engagement events from students about their STEM experiences and summarize that information in an Annual NSM Action Team Report. This captures and summarizes the feedback students have shared at our engagement events and is distributed to faculty early each spring.
