The core work of the team has been the creation of “Bridges,” a series of four connected engagement opportunities that focus on community and confidence building and provide a space for students to share their daily STEM experiences. Each year begins with “Reality Check” which welcomes students to discuss their successes and challenges in small groups. “Pathways” allows seniors to share their experience and “Unscripted” brings alumni to campus to share their personal journey. The year culminates with “Common Ground,” which provides opportunities for students and faculty to sit together in small groups facilitated by Action Team members. Faculty are encouraged to listen and ask questions concerning underrepresented students’ experiences and students are encouraged to provide specific and productive feedback regarding existing initiatives. Information gathered at all events is summarized and shared with STEM faculty.
