- Created “WAPAU CULTURE” poster to remind students about the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive lab environment (see below).
- Worked with faculty member in Computer Science when classes were viewing and discussing “Coded Bias” documentary. Met with faculty member ahead of time, wrote questions, led in-class discussion.
- Collaborated with Director of CURI Summer Research to develop “CURI Bias in Research” workshop research students. Attended and facilitated that event in 2021 and 2022.
- Met with Physics Site Visitor Dr. Ed Bertschinger, one of the lead members of the national TEAM-UP task force and provided Feedback to Physics Department based on the Team Up report. (TEAM-UP is a nationwide effort in the Physics community to promote the thriving of Black students and students of all traditionally marginalized groups). Discussed student experiences in the NSM and Physics culture overall.
- Consulted with a faculty member who recently received an NSF Grant regarding best practices to increase student access to research opportunities.
- Met with Dr. Steven O. Roberts Associate Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, and Academic Director of the Center for Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies who was invited to campus by the Psychology Department to give the Millert Memorial lecture entitled “The Psychology of American Racism”. Dr. Roberts’ research integrates social, cognitive, and developmental research to identify and dismantle the psychological bases of racism.
- Met with the advising team to address challenges STEM student face as they enter the college and switch to advisors in their major.
- Met with Interim Vice President for Equity and Inclusion regarding the progress of the Co-Creating Inclusive Community initiative.
- Completed conversations with Chemistry Department discussing naming of Introductory Chemistry courses to clarify entry level options and course descriptions.
- Interviewed visiting candidates applying for faculty positions in three departments (Biology, Chemistry and Psychology).
- Reviewed survey for Molecular Biology Concentration before it was administered.
- Met with Dr. Angeline Dukes Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota and Founder and President of Black in Neuro. Black In Neuro is an international grassroots organization dedicated to amplifying, providing resources to, and cultivating a supportive community for Black scholars in neuroscience-related fields.
- Collaborated with Biology Faculty Member and a research student to prepare survey for STEM faculty regarding their current DEI efforts.
- Led a workshop in a first year course for biology and chemistry students where tensions had arisen.
- Engaged with Academic Support Center in conversation about Supplemental Instruction (SI), peer interactions and group dynamics and then led focus groups for students that were SI leaders.
- Led Focus Groups in Physics Department for graduating Seniors to explore their experiences.
