General Posting Guidelines:
- All posters and displays hung in Buntrock Commons must include the following information:
- The event date and time (if applicable)
- The event location (if applicable)
- The name of the sponsoring organization/department
- Posters cannot be posted over existing posters
- Posters can only be hung in designated posting areas
- Pushpins should be used when hanging posters on bulletin boards
- Posters cannot be taped to walls, windows, or doors
- Reservable displays (hallways, tall boards, etc.) must be reserved in advance on 25Live.
- Posters can be letter (8.5″ x 11″), tabloid (11″ x 17″), or legal (8.5″ x 14″) sizes
- Large-scale banners and roll paper signs can be hung in select locations in Buntrock Commons. See below sections for more information.
- Un-staffed comment boxes or bulletin boards encouraging anonymous suggestions are not permitted.
- Posters should not include images or statements that are obscene, profane, threatening, libelous, unlawfully harassing or discriminatory, or otherwise a violation of law or college policy.
All members of the St. Olaf community are expected to respect posters/displays and the individuals and organizations that put them up. Tearing down, defacing, or covering up approved postings goes against campus policy and impacts our community in negative ways.
Posting Quantities and Locations:
Organizations/departments are permitted to hang three print posters in Buntrock Commons across the public posting boards. Under the “Policy for Postings”, residence halls and academic buildings may have one poster per event/organization in each building. In general, posters should be hung for a maximum of seven days to prevent cluttering.
Posters may be hung in Buntrock Commons in the following locations:
- Identified bulletin boards in the Post Office Box area
- Bulletin boards near the Office of Student Activities and Taylor Center (student organizations only)
- Free-standing triangle board near Rolvaag Memorial Library
- Boards located outside of Stav Hall entrance
- Public boards located inside the Lion’s Pause
Posters may not be posted on walls, windows, doors, partitions, lockers, mailboxes, woodwork, elevators, restrooms (with the exception of Wellness Center Toilet Talks), or other structural features of the building.
Alternative Display Options:
There are a number of alternative display options in Buntrock available for reservation in 25Live. Click on the various tabs to the right to learn more about advertising and posting options in the Commons. Questions about alternative options can be directed to the Buntrock team.
There are ten designated banner spaces in Buntrock. Four are located in Crossroads and six in Stav Hall.
Banner space may only be reserved through 25Live as a way to advertise events and initiatives open to the entire campus community. Reservations must be placed at least two weeks in advance. Banners will be hung by the Buntrock Office staff from the railings with materials provided by the Commons.
Banners must follow the following guidelines:
- The requesting organization/department is responsible for making the banner. Wide-format printing is available through the Print Center. Buntrock Commons has reusable vinyl banners that can be decorated by student organizations if they do not wish to print a banner.
- Banners hanging in Crossroads can be no larger than 5 feet x 4 feet. Banners hanging in Stav may vary in width, but cannot be more than 5 feet in height. If printing a banner, please ensure that grommets are included.
- Banner space can be reserved for a maximum of one week (seven consecutive days Monday-Sunday) per event in only one location at a time. Banners will not be moved during the week.
- Banners must be dropped off at the Buntrock Scheduling Office (BC007) and will be hung on Monday mornings.
- Banners will be taken down and returned to the Buntrock Scheduling Office after the reservation has ended. Banners left for over a week will be discarded. Buntrock Commons is not responsible for any lost or stolen banners.
- Banners must list the sponsoring organization/department and the time, date (or date range), name, and place of event/initiative (if applicable).
Student organizations, offices/departments, and academic courses are able to reserve the hallways between Buntrock Commons, Rolvaag Memorial Library, and Boe Memorial Chapel (designated as BC/RML for the library and BC/BMC for the chapel in 25Live) to display content relevant to their mission and/or purpose. The hallways are designated North or South (south is closest to the Quad, looking out to the center of the campus). Organizations can request one side of either hallway for two non-consecutive weeks each semester. Only one side of either hallway can be reserved for a specific event, initiative, or cause for one week at a time, regardless of the number of sponsoring organizations. All hallway displays must be removed within 24 hours of the close of the reservation.
Hallway displays must include elements that clearly identify the name of the sponsoring organization with a contact person and active email address or alias. Additional requirements are as follows:
- Only blue tape may be used to adhere anything to walls or windows (student organizations may obtain supplies from the Office of Student Activities).
- Any items hung across the windows using string must be at least seven feet above the ground.
- Only one side of the hallway may be used for a display. Displays may not cross the hallway.
- Displays must not cover the view of security cameras.
Roll paper signs are the only items that can be hung on the bulletin strips above the PO area and on the south balcony railing in Stav Hall. Roll paper signs cannot be hung in other campus buildings as a poster, but can be used for tabling. Registered student organizations can utilize the Poster Room in the Office of Student Activities to create roll paper signs. Non-student organizations including academic departments, offices, music organizations, and athletic teams are not able to use Poster Room resources. The following guidelines apply to roll paper signs in Buntrock Commons:
- A maximum of two roll paper signs for each event/initiative (only one per designated area) may be hung
- Signs will be a maximum 2.5’ x 2.5’
- Pushpins should be used to hang signs above the P.O. boxes and painter’s tape should be used to hang signs in Stav Hall
- All signs must be stamped and approved in the Office of Student Activities
- Paper signs may be hung for a maximum of seven days
Buntrock Commons has several rolling bulletin boards for organizations and departments to reserve for use. Boards can be requested for one week per month in 25Live. Tall boards may not block walkways or doors. The tall board must include elements that clearly identify the name of the sponsoring organization.

Political Postings
Political postings are permitted, but they must list the sponsoring recognized campus group.
On-campus election campaigns (i.e Student Government Association elections) must follow SGA Election policies. Any postings advocating a particular issue or candidate must also identify the sponsoring group(s). A full overview of the College’s political policies can be accessed below.
