てform
The てform has many uses in Japanese. Among these uses are:
- making requests (“…please.”)
- giving and asking for permission (“you may…/May I…”)
- stating that something is forbidden (“you must not…”)
- forming a sentence that describes two events or activities (“I did this and did that.”)
Conjugating for the てform is fairly complex. There are separate rules for る, irregular, and the various うverbs. A summary follows.
るverbs:
たべる → たべて
うverbs come in several groups, based on the final syllable of their ditionary forms.
うverbs with final う、つ、and る
あう → あって
まつ → まって
とる → とって
うverbs with final む、ぶ、and ぬ
よむ → よんで
あそぶ → あそんで
しぬ → しんで
うverbs with final く
かく → かいて
one exception in this class is いく → いって
うverbs with final ぐ
およご → およいで
うverbs with final す
はなす → はなして
irregular verbs
する → して
くる → きて
