Theory is the foundation of your musical education. Our courses begin with the basics and continue on to in depth studies of tonal and atonal music.
St Olaf’s renowned Music Department is well known for their outstanding performance ensembles but that excellence is also a part of our robust Academic Department. St Olaf offers both the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and a Bachelor of Music degree. The Music Department offers classes in a multitude of different disciplines all taught by talented and well respected professors guiding our students success.

Music Education Classes are offered though the Music Department and the Education Department. All our Music Education classes are geared towards graduating well-rounded music teachers.
Composition classes help our budding composers hone in their skills though a variety of classes and private instruction. Our composition professors are active composers who’s music is played by our outstanding ensembles and a variety of other groups thought the world.
Our ever growing Musicology and Ethnomusicology program allows students to dive into a variety of musical genres and cultural music throughout the world.
Jazz studies is a growing program here at St Olaf. Whether understanding where jazz has come from or learning the foundations of improvisation our jazz program has something for all growing musicians.
We offer a multitude of vocal classes for performers and educators. From diction to pedagogy to conducting you will have a solid foundation to take you into the professional world.
Our instrumental studies classes prepare performers and educators for their life beyond St Olaf. From techniques classes to literature to conducting we have classes to get you ready for your instrumental career.
Our keyboard studies classes are for piano and organ students. From literature classes to church music seminars our classes are sure to prepare Ole’s for a professional future.
