All candidates
Drumset auditions are eligible for scholarships. B.A. and B.M. music degrees, however, require a primary focus in percussion.
All candidates will be required to play along with a recording of their choosing to be selected from the following song styles and playlists:
Candidates may also be asked to demonstrate a variety of styles with brushes or sticks including ballad, jazz waltz, slow, medium, or uptempo swing, bossa nova, samba, mambo, etc.
Audition Instructions
Demonstration of Songstyles
Students will play along to recordings from three different songstyles. Students will select one option each from the Swing, Latin, and Ballad playlists found here and demonstrate timekeeping and appropriate stylistic elements for each genre.
Big Band Chart Reading
Students will select and play along with one of the four big charts in this folder. Specific instructions for each chart, as well as reference recordings, can be found here.
Sight Reading
Students will be asked to sight read drum set material that could involve rhythmic reading or limb independence in a variety of styles.
