Quotes about the 2023 Tour:
Q&A with Dr. Chung Park –
What are your thoughts on this year’s tour repertoire, and what audiences can expect to hear at a St. Olaf Orchestra tour concert?
“This year’s repertoire includes a hearty tip of the hat to our western itinerary with Copland’s Four Dances from Rodeo. We’re excited to showcase Ole Orch’s virtuosity, its ear for color, and their ability to bring music off of the page and tell a story. Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony is a beloved masterwork from the 20th century. It is a harrowing and heartfelt missive from the Stalin era Soviet Union, with alternating moments of deep tragedy and tender relief. Audiences will hear an orchestra that plays as a team and works towards a unified goal, made possible by the special culture we exemplify in the phrase ‘Orchie Love.’
Now in your second year, what excites you most about touring with the St. Olaf Orchestra?
Honestly? Just feeling like I can relax a little more and have some fun being in the moment and making music. Even though it’s only my second year I know there are things that will never grow old: conversations on long bus rides, the gasps of excitement when a student from the flat midwest or Florida sees a fourteener (14er) for the first time, watching friendships blossom over the course of several days of shared successes and challenges surmounted, the passing on of traditions and most of all, listening to Ole Orch every night. I remind myself over and over to cherish these moments and the students who are in front of me. They are a treasure and giving their all to make Ole Nation proud.
