  • STUART PIMSLER DANCE AND THEATER PRESENT
    “MATINEE” PAGE-TO-STAGE-TO-SCREEN
Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) has engaged populations worldwide through its performance works and community inclusive programs since its founding in New York City in 1979. SPDT’s interdisciplinary vision weaves movement, spoken text, song, and visual imagery to provoke and comment on the personal and political. Artistic Co-Directors Suzanne Costello and Stuart Pimsler and their company of compelling artists continue to garner critical acclaim for their “theater for the heart & mind.”  SPDT’s current and past company artists have been distinguished for their artistic excellence, garnering seven McKnight Fellowships and five Minnesota SAGE Awards for Dance.

MATINEE is a dance/theater/film adaptation of American avant-garde novelist Robert Coover’s New Yorker short story, created and co-directed by Artistic Co-Directors Stuart Pimsler and Suzanne Costello in collaboration with filmmaker Andrew Welken. Join the artists of Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater as they share their creative process for adapting a short story into a multimedia performance. This lecture/demonstration performance, MATINEE: Page-to-Stage-to-Screen, will take you behind the scenes to see how MATINEE was created and will include excerpts from the final work. We encourage patrons to peruse the short story that inspired this work. Also, view excerpts of the work can also be found here.

“MATINEE revives the thrilling days of yesteryear when cinema was for millions the chief purveyor of dreams and escapism.” – Linda Shapiro, City Pages

“A sumptuous multidisciplinary collaboration” and “a multimedia export that Pimsler can be proud of.” – Rebecca Ritzel, Star Tribune
