Kiara Jorgenson – Assistant Professor of Religion & Environmental Studies
In ENVST 281 we plumb the depths of the Biophilia Hypothesis and pay particular attention to its implications for the conceptualization of human development. In our ‘Children and Nature’ unit we explore E.O. Wilson/ Stephen Kellert’s related theory of ‘prepared/counterprepared learning,’ by looking closely at how affiliation with nature is depicted in children’s literature. Using Kellert’s overview in “Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World” the project explores how story and art influence childhood attraction to and affection for nature as well as aversion toward and exploitation of nature.
