Peter Gittins – Assistant Professor, Chemistry
Ungrading is a student centered method of assessment that minimizes or eliminates traditional grading and focuses on student learning and emphasizes meaningful and actionable feedback. Using Digital Lab Notebooks and Team Dashboards, ungrading was implemented for a 100-120 student multi-section organic chemistry lab sequence.
Collaborative digital notebooks allowed students to work more effectively in teams with students able to see where they were up to in the lab procedure more easily. The comments feature of Google Docs was used by Teaching Assistants to provide feedback on lab notebooks at least once per week and at multiple stages throughout each experiment. This enabled multiple revision cycles and led to general increase in the quality of lab notebooks. Team Dashboards were integral to successful implementation.
