Reaction papers: Recognizing the fact that keeping focus on academic work while going through a pandemic may be challenging for many students, I introduced reaction paper assignment as a way of helping students keep up with their progress in my international economics classes. How does this work? Students respond to questions posted by the instructor based on the reading for the class. Reaction papers are due at 10pm the day before the material would be discussed in class.
The reaction paper assignment is really an important component of the course due to the fact that completion of the assignment provides strong evidence that a student has done the required reading for class and is in a position to contribute meaningfully to class discussions. I construct the questions for the reaction papers in a way that ensures that one can only craft a meaningful response after reading the required course material. Without the reaction paper assignment, it would be difficult to know whether students are doing the required readings or not. Most students in my international economics classes inform me that the reaction paper assignment really helped them to keep up with the course.
To effectively implement reaction paper assignments, I made use of the “Q and A forum” feature associated with open forum in Moodle.
