This course provides an overview of film studies by focusing on three areas: history of film, production (the basic tools of film-making), and theory (the basic vocabulary of film analysis). Students develop visual literacy through engagement with the primary structures, methods, practitioners, history, ideas, and vocabularies of film studies.
Concentration Requirements
5 Courses Required for the FMS Concentration
St. Olaf’s FMS studies concentration consists of 5 courses: FMS 101: Introduction to Film Studies, FMS 140: Film History or FMS 160: The Media Landscape, plus two electives (that engage with the culture, history, or theory of film and media), and one production course.
For More Information on Requirements
Student must take TWO core courses provided by the program. FMS 101 is Required. Student may choose between FMS 140 or FMS 160.
