Studying Abroad for Fall Semester or Fall and January Term

Students studying abroad or away for the Fall semester or the Fall and January term will be given an opportunity to list building and roommate preferences for their return to campus. Students should carefully read Residence Life Newsletters to know when the relevant form is open to be completed as well as when it closes. Students are not guaranteed to have these preferences met.
Students will be placed in assignments that can house them for the entire length of their stay on campus.
- For example, a student whose program is stated to be for the Fall semester only will be given a bed assignment for the January term and the Spring semester, regardless of whether they plan to be on campus for the January term.
- If their preferred bed placement does not have an open space for both the January and Spring semesters, they will not be placed there. Students will need to go through the standard room change process once they are on campus if they want to change into a different bed assignment for the Spring Semester.
- Current students on campus will not be relocated to meet the preferred living spaces of returning students.
Students should assume they will be placed in multiple-occupancy rooms unless they have an approved accommodation for a single room. This includes but is not limited to doubles, triples, and quads.
- Students will be notified via the Housing Portal when they can check their placement.
- Students are encouraged to check their placement as soon as possible and contact Residence Life with any concerns.

Studying Abroad for January Term Only
- Students studying abroad for the January Term only will retain their Fall bed assignment when they return. They do not need to move out at the end of the Fall semester.
- This may be subject to change, and students would be informed in a Residence Life Newsletter if a change occurs.
Studying Abroad for January Term and Spring Semester

Students studying abroad for the January Term and Spring Semester are expected to move out at the end of the Fall semester, regardless of when their program begins. Move-out must be completed by 4:00 PM on the day residence halls close, as listed on the Living on Campus webpage.
Students who need housing until their program begins are not guaranteed a housing placement. Students may request a housing accommodation until their program begins by contacting the Assistant Director of Assignments and Billing.
If approved to stay on campus until their program begins, students will be required to relocate to another housing accommodation so that their room can be prepared for an incoming on-campus student or be available for room changes for on-campus students. Students will be required to move to this alternative housing location by the time halls close at the end of the Fall semester. Students are encouraged to begin packing in advance for the move as they may not be given more than 24 hours to move to the alternative location.
