Please utilize the guide below if you have any questions about the Roommate Linking Process.
PROCESS AND TIMELINE INFORMATION

All new and transfer students are able to provide information on lifestyle preferences through the New & Transfer Student Housing Agreement & Roommate Questionnaire.
Starting May 1 through May 31, students should log into their housing portal through SIS. During this time period, students will indicate if they would like to participate in Roommate Pairing (Residence Life will pair you with another roommate) or if they want to participate in Roommate Linking (students can search for and match with other students) on their Housing Agreement & Roommate Questionnaire. You must complete your Housing Agreement & Roommate Questionnaire to participate in Roommate Linking.
- Click: SIS
- Click: Residence Life (on the left side of the page)
- Click: Applications
- 2026-2027 New & Transfer Student Housing Agreement
- Students should select “Roommate Linking” or “Roommate Pairing” based on their preference.
Students currently outside of the United States will need to use a VPN to access their Housing Portal. All St. Olaf students can download a VPN using their login credentials. For more information, you can follow the link here to our IT Solutions webpage: VPN Connection.
Students selecting Roommate Linking will be given further instructions on how to search for roommates. Students may decide to change their decision on roommate linking. If you would like to change to Roommate Pairing or Roommate Linking, please click here. Roommate Pairing facilitated by Residence Life staff occurs concurrently in late June.
For all students, Roommate Pairing/Linking & Housing assignments will be announced July 15 – Aug 1.
Many students will select the Residence Life team to review their Roommate Inventory & Housing Questionnaire profile and identify their roommate. Through Roommate Pairing, Residence Life reviews the entire profile.
Roommate Linking is also an option for a student. The student will be provided five criterions by to search the portal. Students will be able to utilize the St. Olaf email address/username to communicate with their potential roommate. If students initially choose Roommate Linking and mid-process decide it’s not for them, they may opt back in to Roommate Pairing, by clicking here.
There is not a right or wrong option, but one that is best for you.
Residence Life is excited to support you in Roommate Pairing. We will use your Roommate Inventory & Housing Questionnaire Form throughout the process. When pairing you, we will also incorporate other intersecting identities where possible. You may be matched with students from another state or from another country. Our intention is to match students who may have varied experiences in order to form a rich and diverse community.
- Students will receive their roommate and housing assignment in Late June!
Roommate Linking is an option that you have to select your own roommate. Upon that selection you will receive the next steps to begin your search for a roommate. You will be able to search using five questions. We encourage you to engage with your potential roommates utilizing their stolaf.edu email address.
The questions are below:
- On weeknights, I expect to go to sleep:
- How important is it to you that your room be kept neat and orderly
- I prefer to share my belongings with my roommate:
- Do you expect your room to be a place where people gather to relax?
- Are you sensitive or allergic to smoke?
Between June 6 and June 20, you have the ability to see responses and communicate directly with students to assess if they would be a roommate match for you.
Housing Assignments will be announced July 15 – Aug 1!
If you decide that you would like to transition to Roommate Pairing you can simply submit that request here.
