Winter Break Inspections will occur on Friday, January 30.
Students who are leaving campus for J-Term Break (January 31 through February 4), please follow the steps below before your departure:
- Clean up any messes or spills in your room
- Take out any trash to the dumpster before you leave
- Turn off any lights in the room
- Unplug any appliances except your microfridge unit or fish tanks
- If applicable: turn your thermostat down to low, but not off
- Close and lock your windows and blinds/shades
Students returning to campus for the Spring term do not need to checkout with a Residence Life staff member before their departure.
Students leaving to study abroad for Spring term will need to follow the Checkout instructions to move out of their Residence Hall space. Students must checkout of their Residence Hall space by 4 pm on Saturday, January 31.
Students in need of on-campus storage should follow the link above to the Storage website to inquire about campus storage options.

J-Term Break Checkout
Students must checkout of their residence hall at the end of the January term if leaving for any of the following reasons:
Studying Abroad for the Spring Semester
Graduation
Leave of Absence
Leaving St. Olaf College
Check-Out Processes
Formal Check-Out Process
- Students can schedule a formal checkout with their Area Coordinator via email. Please see the Area Coordinator Staff here.
- Formal Check outs will take place Wednesday, January 28 —Saturday, January 31.
- Check outs will be scheduled from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
- All check outs need to be scheduled 72-hours in advance with your Area Coordinator.
- Students will have the opportunity to appeal any room damages assessed during their check out time.
Informal Check-Out Process
- Informal check outs can be completed at any time starting Monday, January 26 at 9:00 am until January 31 at 4:00 pm
- Residents will pick up a key envelope from their Residence Hall front desk during operating hours (6 p.m. – 10 p.m).
- Residents will write their Name, Building, E-mail Address, and Room Number on the key envelope.
- Once the resident has moved all of their belongings out of their room, the resident should put their key in the key envelope and place the key in the Ytterboe Drop Box (1st floor entry alcove).
- Residence Life staff will walkthrough the space at a later time to assess the state of the room.
- Residents choosing the informal checkout process will not have the opportunity to appeal any damage fees assessed during the staff walkthrough of the space.
