Symptom Checker – Introducing ProtectWell App
To St. Olaf College faculty and staffFrom Vice President of Human Resources Michael Goodson
As was mentioned during the All Campus Meeting on August 5, we are ready to introduce an app called ProtectWell that will help each member of our community check for COVID-19 symptoms daily. Developed by UnitedHealth Group, ProtectWell is an easy to use app to assist us with the commitment each of us made in our Community Standards and Community Pledge for daily health screening. Please watch for an email this week from UnitedHealth Group (firstname.lastname@example.org) with instructions on how to download the app to your phone and create an account.
If you are coming to campus, we ask that each day you take your temperature and complete the ProtectWell app before reporting to work. It will take only a minute or two to complete each day. If you are working remotely 100% of the time, you do not need to complete the app, although we encourage you to use it as it can be a good safety protocol for going out in public in general and it will be good practice when you do return to campus. If you are working remotely but have an unexpected need to come to campus, you must complete the app.
ProtectWell uses symptoms outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Slight modifications on the questions asked and the list of symptoms may change if the CDC changes its guidance. The app will ask if you are experiencing new or worsening onset of various COVID-19 symptoms. If you have none, you will be asked if you have had any symptoms over the past two weeks. If not, you will be given the okay to go to work. Almost all of the symptoms, if new or worsening, will generate a “red” reading and ask you to notify your supervisor/Chair and Associate Dean, and stay home and rest. If you are instructed to stay home, we want you to stay home. Work remotely if you can. If you are sick, salaried employees will be paid for the time off and hourly employees will be able to log up to 80 hours hours for COVID-19 related illness in a special Sick Leave Reserve (SLR-ER) box in the Time Entry System.
St. Olaf will not receive any information from ProtectWell regarding the symptoms, but will receive information daily on who got the okay to work and who was notified to stay home so we can be ready to provide assistance if needed.
You will receive an email in the next few days to invite you to download ProtectWell. Please follow the instructions to download the app and create an account as soon as possible. It is expected that all faculty and staff will begin using the app as soon as you download the app. Attached you will find some frequently asked questions along with responses.
We hope this additional protocol of COVID-19 symptom checking will, in conjunction with other prevention methods outlined in our Community Standards, help keep our community safe for those returning to The Hill.
Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.
On behalf of the ProtectWell implementation team,
Carl Crosby Lehmann
