Office Hours Fall ’13: by appointment only.
I am teaching industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology during the fall 2013 semester. I’m hopeful that students will greatly benefit from the applied nature of the course which incorporates a multitude of examples gleaned from my 10+ years of applied experience and the wisdom of multiple practitioner guest speakers. The majority of my experience has been spent working as an internal consultant for two Fortune 100 companies: Safeway Inc. in the San Francisco Bay Area and Best Buy right here in Minnesota. My areas of specialty include:
• Designing and implementing high-volume pre-employment assessment programs
• Providing litigation support on a variety of sensitive HR issues
• Designing and implementing performance management programs
• Managing large-scale employee survey research programs
While I most certainly identify as a practitioner, I am now putting forth more effort in the academic arena. I am currently partnering with Harvard University to assess the impact of perceptions of ethics on job performance among Services employees. I also recently partnered with a research team to publish ground-breaking work on the measurement equivalence of pre-employment assessments across mobile and non-mobile devices (e.g., iPhones and iPads vs. PCs). I’m an active member of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and Minnesota Psychology Professionals Applied to Work (MPPAW).
My approach to teaching this fall will be to make I/O theory and concepts ‘come alive’ by using real-world business situations, problems, and legal cases as examples for students. In addition, I pride myself on explaining relatively complex statistics and applied research methods in a way that’s accessible and easy to understand. I am most easily contacted via my alternate St. Olaf email which is linked to my iPhone and iPad (ScottLBoydStOlaf@Yahoo.com) and am happy to field questions about the field of I/O psychology.
