The Residence Life housing program for the 2024-2025 academic year will include Affiliate housing. Affiliate housing is residential space that is not owned by the College, but is leased and controlled by the College for the purpose of providing a residential experience to its students.
The Affiliate housing will operate under St. Olaf College Residence Life Housing Policies and Procedures. This includes alcohol, THC & other drugs are prohibited. In addition, residents are expected to abide by the applicable policies of the Affiliate housing location.
Affiliate housing is not off-campus housing. Students who sign up for housing at Northwood Pines do not need to complete the Housing Exemption process since this is an Affiliate housing space.
Affiliate housing is not located on the main campus, and there are some differences and exceptions to amenities and services. Students must understand, acknowledge, and abide by the process that applies to the Affiliate Housing to enter the selection process and to reside successfully in the space.
This affiliate housing option is available for students for the 2024-2025 academic year only. Northwood Pines is a townhouse community located one and a half mile away from St. Olaf’s campus. After the 2024-2025 academic school year, all residents will reside on the College’s main campus.
Housing Information:
The Affiliate Housing is located in Northwood Pines Townhouse. Students are expected to respect the community property, abide by Northfield City Laws and Ordinance, and the Good Neighbor Expectations.
There are two styles of townhouses available for students to select from:
- Triple Suite
- Quad Suite
Parking at Northwood Pines
Surface Level Parking
Surface level parking is available for each resident living at the Northwood Pines Townhouses. Students will register their vehicles with Residence Life. Your vehicle information will be shared with the Northwood Pines community.
Parking On-Campus
Vehicle Registration
Students living at Northwood Pines are provided a complimentary Commuter Parking Permit by the Parking office to park on-campus (if the student has a vehicle).
Students needing a commuter pass must apply with Public Safety.
Students living at the Northwood Pines may park their vehicle overnight on campus in a commuter parking lot using their commuter parking pass.
Bicycle Registration
Students who plan on biking to campus must register their bicycle with the Public Safety office.
Students living in Affiliate Housing must have a partial meal plan (at minimum).

- Trash Pickup at the Northwood Pines are Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 am. All trash should be placed in the trash bins outside of the Northwood Pines by this time to make sure that it is picked up
- Recycling pickup at the Northwood Pines are Tuesdays and Fridays at 6:30 am. All recycling should be placed in the recycling bins outside of the Northwood Pines by this time to make sure that it is picked up.
The Northwood Pines townhouses are furnished with limited College furniture.

Lofting and bunking is not provided at Northwood Pines

No soft seating/living room furniture is provided by the College.
Kitchen

Amenities included for students include:

Students are responsible for their own amenities including (but not limited to):

Transportation is not provided to students by the College. Students should plan their transportation accordingly (i.e., driving, busline, biking, walking).
Northfield Transit
Residents may use the Northfield Blue line bus system to get to campus. Students interested in this option can use their Ole ID to get onto any city bus. For more details please view the image below (or view the Northfield Transit Brochure online here). Students using this option should plan accordingly. See the following example for timing:
Walking & Biking
Students choosing to walk or bike to campus have several options to get to campus. See example below for timing
- Students choosing to walk along Lincoln St should anticipate a 30-minute walk.
- Students choosing to bike along Lincoln St should anticipate a 15-minute bike ride.
- Two live-in student staff members will reside at Northwood Pines.
- Residence Life Professional Staff on-call will respond and provide support.
- Northfield Police will be first responders for emergency response.
- Public Safety will support Residence Life and Northfield Police when requested.
Custodial Services will not provide services at the Affiliates. All students who live at Northwood Pines understand that they are responsible for the general cleaning and upkeep of their space while living in their apartment space.
Residents at the affiliate housing will pay room and board fees to their student accounts. St. Olaf College handles all room charges to the affiliate housing property. Students who receive an indoor parking permit are directly responsible for paying any fee associated with an indoor parking permit to the affiliate housing property.
Spring Checkout Information

The Checkout Process will take place from Thursday, May 15 — Sunday, May 25. Only students approved for extended stay may sign up for a checkout time on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.
All checkouts must be completed in person with a Residence Life staff member. There are no informal self-checkout options for Affiliate Housing. Failure to check out with a staff member will result in an improper checkout fee.
The Checkout Process will take place during the following times, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. To schedule your checkout time, please use the sign-up link provided below.

The following steps apply to all Affiliate Housing residents unless otherwise noted:

Keys/Fobs and Parking Permits (as applicable to your specific community) will be collected at that time.

Please note that due to the different criteria for Affiliate Housing Program, not turning in these items will result in an immediate charge. No mail-ins will/can be accepted.

Sweep and vacuum your space as needed.

Clean out your refrigerator, do not unplug them.

Wipe down all surfaces.

Remove all trash to the dumpsters located outside of your respective building.

Heat should be set to low, but not off.

Ensure that windows are closed and locked and that window blinds/curtains are closed.
Please note that Affiliate Housing does not offer storage. If you are moving to a residence hall for Fall 2025-2026, you may use the Transfer Storage Process to store your belongings in your future residence hall.

Resident Agreement
A community agreement is not in place from Northwood Pines at this time. If a community agreement is created and implemented, all residents will be expected to comply with the agreement.
Good Neighbor Expectations
The St. Olaf College Residence Life Good Neighbor Expectations consists of guidelines and agreements designed to help the College’s residents and develop a positive relationship with their fellow residents, neighbors, and the greater Northfield community in which they live. Residents are expected to follow the Good Neighbor Expectations as a requirement of their Agreement. Residence Life will assist and support residents in achieving the Good Neighbor objectives.
St. Olaf College Students living at any Affiliate Housing location within a managed Residence Life space are residents within an integrated community. As a member of the location, the College and Residents must value and respect the relationship that exists between all parties. Students are expected to keep noise levels to a respectful level during daytime and evening hours, participate in keeping the grounds and building well-maintained, and ensure guests adhere to on-site and local area parking rules and regulations.
Residence Life supports student’s personal responsibility in addressing interpersonal disagreements within their communal spaces. It is important for residents to ackowledge the difference this may present in an integrated community. Issues/concerns with a non-St. Olaf College student that are not an emergency should be brought to the attention of Residence Life for it to be formally addressed. In all instances, strive for open and honest communication.
All violations, including noise, vandalism, and health and safety infractions can result in removal from Affiliate Housing and relocation to campus proper. If violations warrant such actions, student may also be removed from St. Olaf housing.
Students should be active members of their community. Maintain cleanliness of all common areas, dispose of trash and recycling on a weekly basis, attend all mandatory residential meetings, participate in onsite trainings, and participate in community safety and emergency preparedness plans.
Residence Life will conduct monthly Health & Safety Inspections during the following months:

- Northfield City Ordinance Chapter 50, Section 90, states that any disruptive noise between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:00 am can be deemed a misdemeanor offense.
- Residence Life Policy states that Courtesy Hours are in place 24-hours a day.
- Residents in Affiliate Housing should be aware of the noise levels in all public spaces, including: hallways, stairwells, and residential spaces to not disturb neighbors.
- Students wanting to report any noise issues that need to be addressed are encouraged to call the non-emergency Northfield Police number (507-645-8833). In case of emergency, students should call 911.
- All residents will follow the pet guidelines as outlined in the Residence Life Housing Policies and Procedures.
- Students are allowed Fish within a 15-gallon tank are permitted in Affiliate housing.
- Service Animals and ESA animals will follow the guidelines as proscribed by the Disability and Access & Residence Life Offices.
- Residents may not keep animals or pets, including no visiting animals or “pet sitting,” in Affiliate Housing spaces.
Residents will adhere to all posted parking regulations and engage in good neighbor practices regarding parking on or around the Affiliate Housing property. Vehicles should be parked in approved parking spots, garages, and/or driveways only. Resident’s vehicle should not negatively impact a neighbor’s access.
- Residents should be aware that failure to abide by City of Northfield laws or ordinances may result in fines, citations, and penalties.
- Failure to abide by Northwood Pines Apartments policies may result in removal from the property.
- Failure to abide by St. Olaf College Residence Life Housing Policies & Procedures may result in removal from the affiliate proper and relocation to campus proper or removal from St. Olaf College Housing.
Students who hear or see anything that casues you alarm are encouraged to call the non-emergency Northfield Police number (507-645-8833). In case of emergency, students should call 911.
All Residents are responsible for guests invited into their building and assigned residential space.

Bedrooms are not considered private entities within each apartment. The bathroom is inside a bedroom and must remain accessible to all residents.
