FALL SEMESTER 2021

Early and Baseline Testing

Early testing (Aug 11 – Sept 3):

  • For athletes and other community members on campus before the start of Fall
  • 1231 tests
  • 6 positive results – individuals isolated
  • 0.49% test positivity rate for early testing

Baseline testing, Round 1 (Sept 7 – 9):

  • 3,125 tests run
  • 8 positive results – individuals isolated
  • 0.26% test positivity rate for round 1

Baseline testing, Round 2 (Sept 20 – 22):

  • 3,492 tests run
  • 7 positive results – individuals isolated
  • 0.20% test positivity rate for round 2
summer term 2021

Only 1 individual was isolated as a result of a positive COVID-19 test over the summer.

SPring semester 2021

This summary includes only individuals (students, faculty, and staff) who were living/studying/working on campus during the Spring 2021 semester (Feb 8 – May 25). Entirely remote students or employees were excluded.

  • 196 instances of individuals (195 unique individuals) placed in isolation as a result of a positive COVID-19 test or as a result of experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
    • 163 instances of individuals receiving a positive COVID-19 test and being isolated until they recovered
    • 33 instances of individuals initially isolated because they were experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, then ultimately released from isolation after a negative COVID-19 test
  • 299 instances of individuals (291 unique individuals) placed in quarantine as a result of exposure to an individual infected with COVID-19
  • 21,188 total COVID-19 tests administered through St. Olaf’s testing plan
    • 6,526 baseline tests administered at the beginning of the semester (see below for further details about baseline testing)
      • 10 individuals tested positive
    • 14,662 additional tests administered throughout the rest of the semester for the following groups: people with symptoms, people in quarantine, people who may be at high risk for exposure, and people randomly selected for surveillance testing
      • 121 individuals tested positive
    • All other identified infections reflected self-reported positive test results from tests conducted elsewhere
  • As of May 20, 62% of the St. Olaf community (74% of faculty/staff, 59% of students) were fully vaccinated, meaning they had received the 1-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, or both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

Spring Baseline Testing

Round 1 (Feb 8 – Feb 11):

  • 3,252 tests run
  • 9 positive results – individuals isolated
  • 0.28% test positivity rate for round 1
  • 19 people quarantined as a result of potential exposure to COVID-19

Round 2 (Feb 15 – Feb 18):

  • 3,274 tests run
  • 1 positive result – individual isolated
  • 0.03% test positivity rate for round 2
  • 1 person quarantined as a result of potential exposure to COVID-19
Winter Break and Interim 2020-21

This summary includes students living on campus and faculty/staff working or coming to campus during the winter break and interim (Nov 25 – Feb 9). During this time, the majority of students were living at home, and many faculty and staff were working remotely.

  • 12 individuals (6 during Winter Break, 6 during Interim) placed in isolation as a result of a positive COVID-19 test or as a result of experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
    • All symptomatic individuals tested positive for COVID-19 and were isolated until they recovered
  • 32 individuals (23 during Winter Break, 9 during Interim) placed in quarantine as a result of exposure to an individual infected with COVID-19
  • 1,227 tests administered through St. Olaf’s testing plan
    • 316 surveillance tests during Winter Break
      • 1 individual tested positive
    • 338 baseline tests at the beginning of Interim
      • 1 individual tested positive
    • 573 surveillance tests during Interim
      • 1 individual tested positive
    • All other identified infections reflected self-reported positive test results from tests conducted elsewhere
Fall Semester 2020

This summary includes only individuals (students, faculty, and staff) who were living/studying/working on campus during the Fall 2020 semester (Aug 4 – Nov 24), as this was the group reported on in the dashboard. Entirely remote students or employees were excluded.

  • 173 instances of individuals (170 unique individuals) placed in isolation as a result of a positive COVID-19 test or as a result of experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
    • 123 instances of individuals receiving a positive COVID-19 test and being isolated until they recovered
    • 50 instances of individuals initially isolated because they were experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, then ultimately released from isolation after a negative COVID-19 test
  • 384 instances of individuals (370 unique individuals) placed in quarantine as a result of exposure to an individual infected with COVID-19
  • 12,310 total COVID-19 tests administered through St. Olaf’s testing plan
    • 6,835 baseline tests administered (see below for further details about baseline testing)
      • 38 individuals tested positive
    • 3,082 surveillance tests (random weekly testing of approximately 300 individuals) administered
      • 10 individuals tested positive
    • 173 targeted tests (testing of individuals more likely to be infected due to direct exposure) administered
      • 12 individuals tested positive
    • 2,220 saliva tests administered before the Thanksgiving holiday (students were the primary population tested)
      • 9 individuals tested positive
    • All other identified infections reflected self-reported positive test results from tests conducted elsewhere

Fall Baseline Testing

The table below displays the weekly results for the two rounds of COVID-19 baseline testing for faculty, staff, and students. Data reflect students studying on campus and all current employees for the fall 2020 semester. The number of individuals “in isolation” or “in quarantine” in each row reflect the counts for the final day of that week (e.g., Aug 10, Aug 17, etc.). Those in the “restriction ended” column moved out of isolation or quarantine during the given week.
