The Flaten Art Museum supports St. Olaf faculty as a rich learning resource through exhibitions and the collection. Here are ways to tap the museum’s offerings:
Make the galleries your classroom. Our rotating exhibitions offer multiple entry points for teaching and learning. Museum staff can offer guided tours tailored to your course objectives, or give you the space to lead your own. Explore the 2024-25 Exhibitions Schedule and request a visit.
Teach with our art collection. Object-based learning is a form of active learning that uses artwork to inspire close observation and critical thinking. With over 5,000 objects, we can work with you to pull a unique selection of objects and help you design an activity or assignment that enhances your teaching. Teach in our Object Study Room, a small classroom for close encounters with art. Two weeks advance notice is appreciated. Consult with Collections Team.
Curate an exhibition. The Flaten Art Museum presents major interdisciplinary exhibitions originated and co-curated by St. Olaf faculty. Explore recent faculty-curated exhibitions, including Altered Skyline, We No Longer Consider Them Damaged, Picturing Nature, Mixed Messages, and Andy Warhol and his Contemporaries: An Urban Milieu.
Bring art into your office. Our Campus Loan Program places artwork from the collection around campus, including faculty and staff offices. Each fall, St. Olaf employees have an opportunity to borrow artwork from the circulating collection.
Visit for your own enjoyment. Research shows that visiting an art museum can help reduce stress, combat loneliness, and make life feel more meaningful. Slip away for a moment, and find some inspiration during regular museum hours.
