Support
Flaten Art Museum enhances campus life through exhibitions, events and programs, and its collections. Our galleries and object study areas in the Center for Art and Dance serve as an innovative interdisciplinary hub for the faculty, staff, students, families, and alumni of St. Olaf College and the greater Northfield community.
Donors provide vital funds for exhibitions, expansion of museum programs, and new acquisitions that enhance creative life on campus.

Gifts of Art
Flaten Art Museum appreciates the generosity of donors whose gifts of art shape our collection. Artwork in our collection is cared for to the highest standards and is made accessible for teaching, learning, and scholarship.
We are focused on growing our collection to include artists whose identities are reflected in our campus community, but have long been underrepresented in our collection and many other museum collections. As we develop new strategies for collection expansion, the museum’s advisory committee approved a temporary pause on accepting new gifts of art at its May 9, 2022 meeting.
Collecting Priorities
Flaten Art Museum is dedicated to acquiring works of high aesthetic quality and art of historical importance that can be used for teaching and learning. Our collecting priorities are:
Modern and contemporary art from around the globe
Works of social commentary

Works that directly enhance teaching and visual culture at the College
Our current areas of greatest need due to notable gaps in the collection are (in no particular order):
Contemporary Indigenous Art
Contemporary LGBTQIA+ Art
Contemporary Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Art
Contemporary Latinx Art
Contemporary Somali Art
Contemporary Hmong Art
Contemporary African American Art
