Small in scale yet grand in meaning, the objects in A Scholar’s Studio represent a rare glimpse into the private life of a traditional Chinese scholar. Drawn from a recent donation of Asian artworks to St. Olaf College by Sophie and Steve Mathonnet – VanderWell, this exhibition reflects on the various types of objects used and treasured by Chinese scholars across the centuries, providing insights into that which has forever changed alongside what has stayed the same.
Curated by Associate Professor of Art and Art History Karil Kucera, and Carleton College Professor of Art History, Kathleen Ryor, This exhibition, with support from a 2016 Broadening the Bridge grant, highlights recent acquisitions of Chinese ceramics and lacquerware from the VanderWell collection. On view in Groot Gallery.
Closed for Thanksgiving Break November 23rd through 27th.
