The National Map is the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) portal to most of its geospatial data products. It provides links to its new version of its series of quadrangle maps, US Topo, to the Historical Topographic Map Collection, a searchable archive of more than 200,000 USGS topographical maps all the back to 1884.
The main feature of the National Map is the new Viewer and Download Platform. This tools allows users to preview and download a variety of datsets covering:
- Elevation (in the form of the National Elevation Dataset)
- Orthoimagery
- Hydrography (from the National Hydrography Dataset)
- Geographic Names
- Transportation
- Structures
- Land Cover
The National Map viewer is the primary source for elevation data from Digital Elevation Models, which are produced by the USGS. Note that certain datasets, like space-borne imagery (especially Landsat) and LiDAR aren’t available from The National Map, but are from other portals like EarthExplorer.
