Food for thought…
There are a number of considerations to make when involving food in your event.
What food do you wish to have at your event?
Is food a central element to your event or are you hoping to simply provide refreshments? Being clear on the role that food will play during your event will assist in the planning process.
Where can you order food from?
There are three main sources for food orders: Bon Appétit, the Lion’s Pause, and outside sources. More information about these three options and their respective processes can be found at the bottom of this webpage.
Where is your event being held?
If your event is occurring on the St. Olaf Campus, food must be provided by Bon Appétit or the Lion’s Pause unless pre-approved by the Office of Student Activities. To maintain food safety standards and for ease of logistics, we recommend that event planners use Bon Appétit catering.
How much can you spend?
Food can at times be an expensive component to an event. Please make sure to consider food costs as you budget for your event.
How will you safely store and serve your food?
Food storage, service, and safety are key when incorporating food into your event. The Office of Student Activities manages a small kitchenette in Buntrock Commons where food can be stored short-term for events. Student Organizations must work the the OSA to ensure all food safety requirements are followed in preparing, storing and serving food. Catering ordered through Bon Appétit or the Lion’s Pause will come ready to serve.
BON APPÉTIT CATERING
Bon Appétit is able to create a custom menu for almost any event. While there is a form avaliable on the website, catering through Bon Appétit is best arranged by email. Catering orders must be placed at least two weeks before your event is scheduled to occur.
LION’S PAUSE
The Lion’s Pause offers a number of catering options from their regular menu, including pizza, beverages, and cookies. Large orders must be placed at least 24 hours in advance.
OUTSIDE FOOD
If Bon Appétit is unable to accommodate a food request, student organizations must get approval from the OSA to use an outside licensed food vendor.
Food Preparation and Storage
Student organizations have access to a kitchenette (BC 113) for light food preparation. The kitchenette includes a sink, refrigerator, and freezer. To access the kitchenette, please connect with a member of the OSA staff. Food preparation that is more complex or involves the cooking of food must be done in consultation with the OSA.
Unopened, non-perishable, and/or recently prepared food is able to be stored in the student organization kitchenette or in student organization storage for a short period of time during the academic year. No food can be stored over the summer.
