The theft of billfolds, purses, backpacks, and jackets are some of the easiest and most common crimes on college campuses. If you follow these suggestions, your chance of becoming a victim will be reduced. If you do become a victim, your loss can be minimized.

- Do not leave your personal items/belongings unattended.
- Always lock your bicycle to a bike rack and use a quality lock.
- NEVER prop open an exterior door and NEVER open the door for someone you don’t know.
- Lock the doors and windows to your room when it is unoccupied and when you are sleeping.
- Do not leave your wallet, purse, or large amounts of money in plain view in your room.
- If you have valuables in your room, store them out of sight.
- Always require identification before allowing someone unfamiliar to enter your room.
- Record the make, model and serial numbers of all valuable property in your room.
- Keep your curtains drawn during the evening.
- Limit the amount of cash you carry with you.
- Separate your cash and credit cards.
- Keep a list of all credit card numbers and the issuing company number in a safe place.
