Marketing your Events & Organizations

Print marketing materials such as posters are a common way to share information about your organization and its upcoming events. When designing, printing, and posting fliers around campus, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Poster considerations

• Is your design clear? Is your text legible? Is there a good color contrast? Is your poster too crowded or busy?
• Do you have the sponsoring organization on your poster?
• Do you have the date, time, and location on your poster?
• Are printed posters the best option? Would digital marketing be more effective?

Review the posting guidelines

Most campus buildings have public posting boards. Posters should not be hung on office or departmental bulletin boards without first obtaining permission. To post the maximum number of posters, organizations should print 20 posters.

Posters may not be posted on walls, windows, doors, partitions, lockers, mailboxes, woodwork, elevators, restrooms, classrooms, or other structural features of campus buildings.

Social media, whether through Instagram, Twitter, or other platforms, can be both a great way to promote your organization and events as well as provide opportunities to connect members.

Using social media for your student organization

• Make sure you are active! We recommend posting at least once a week during the school year and at least once a month during breaks
• Keep it simply by maintaining one account for your organization
• Have a succession plan and store your passwords in a safe yet accessible place to ensure that the new organizational leadership can take over from year to year.

Social media at St. Olaf

• A student organization’s social media presence is expected to be in line with the Code of Conduct. Your account should not depict students in danger, use inappropriate or defamatory language, document substance use, etc.
• Official St. Olaf logos and branding are not allowed in your organization’s profile image. Please review the student organization brand guide and the college’s statement on trademark infringement for more information.
• Accounts that are neglected, abandoned, or found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct will receive a warning from the Assistant Director of Digital Communications and may face deletion.
