For a great overall description of what a certain major or discipline entail, link to the Academic Catalog’s description of it by clicking on the individual department of interest.
Go to that department’s web page by clicking on the name of the department from this list. There you will find lots of information on that major, including a basic description, course requirements, department events, sometimes frequently asked questions, and more.
Meet with a faculty member. Preferably meet with the department chair to hear more about the major, as well. These are the people who can best answer your questions. They may be able to provide you with a sample syllabus from the courses to help you make your decision. Follow this link to each department’s home page, where you can look up contact information for faculty and department chairs.
For each department of interest, choose two courses from the Academic Catalog that appear particularly interesting from their titles and descriptions, regardless of which level they are. Record their titles and numbers, then go to the bookstore and review the books assigned for those classes.
Talk to upperclass students in different majors. This is another great way to get more information about a major. Department offices can provide you with names and contact info of students in that department who would be willing to talk with you.
Test an interest through taking related classes. This is a great way to really see how your interest applies in the classroom.
