Fundamentals of Building: Materials and Methods

The specific objectives of this program are to:

• Learn to draw and design for the materials and machines available

• Gain an understanding of how to choose your machine and your material for best outcomes

• Find / create designs and files of useful and buildable items hand drawing and CAD work

• Understand when to borrow and modify and when to start from scratch, when designing

• Develop an understanding of how to design around a product defect when repairing a broken item by building your own better part.

• Develop a working knowledge of machine maintenance care and

  troubleshooting

• Gain an understanding of safety in power tool usage and how to select a machine for the specific material

This schedule would be pending the result of the initial survey of interest from students for each of the materials.

Interim:

• Mondays: Wood Working (1/8; 1/15; 1/22; 1/29)

• Tuesdays: Model Making (1/9; 1/16; 1/17; 1/24)

• Wednesdays: Additive Manufacturing (1/3; 1/10; 1/17; 1/24)

• Thursdays: Metals & Welding (1/4; 1/11; 1/18; 1/25)

Note: All class times are 4pm – 5pm*.

Spring:

• Monday: Wood Working (2/12; 2/19; 2/26; 3/4; 3/11; 3/18)

• Tuesday: Model Making (2/13; 2/20; 2/27; 3/5; 3/12; 3/19)

• Wednesday: Additive Manufacturing (2/14; 2/21; 2/28; 3/6; 3/13; 3/20)

• Thursday: Metals & Welding (2/15; 2/22; 2/29; 3/7; 3/14; 3/21)

Note: All class times are 4-5pm*.

• First year, sophomore, junior or senior with a strong academic record

• Any academic discipline is welcome

• Strong interest in the subject matter

• All majors welcome, but students in physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, studio arts, and theatre are encouraged to apply

• Able to effectively work as part of a team
