Reciprocity is the most important part of networking. Connecting with others and building relationships is a two-way street.
Professional relationships formed through networking require give and take. Express appreciation for the assistance you receive, and offer help in return whenever possible.
Keep in mind that an opportunity to give back or “pay it back” may not come right away. You might be a few years out of college before you have something concrete to offer a professional who helped you. As an example, in return for valuable career advice and referrals, a college junior might meet with the professional’s high-school-aged son to offer advice on how to find a good college.
When it makes sense to do so, keep the professionals with whom you’ve met informed of your progress. Let them know when you have accepted a position, and thank them for helping you along the way.
