Come in to the Piper Center and check out the books in our resource library that describe different jobs or career fields and what qualifications are necessary to pursue that field.
Check out the Online Alumni Directory. You must either log in with your my.stolaf account or create an account to begin searching. The directory can be used to find alumni who are doing what you want to do so that you can contact them for the best advice on how to prepare for a certain occupational area. Try doing a simple search by occupation, choosing anything in the “occupation” field. From the list of alums that results, click on each one and obtain their contact information. You can then email them, call them, even meet with them to ask, “What are the best steps I can take that will lead me to this type of job?” This type of discussion is called an informational interview. Follow the link to find out more specifics on how to make your approach and what to ask.
Fill out a Career Exploration Worksheet – Using resources found on the Piper Center ’s website, find the following information for each occupation that is of interest to you. Use more than one source to obtain your data, and incorporate any work experience you have had.
