Active bodies are critical to human health and wellness across all ages, abilities, and cultures, yet often a lack of cultural competency or physical adaptation around diverse active bodies results in marginalization of those most in need. This workshop and certificate experience aims to provide students with tools and techniques to improve diverse participation and inclusivity for individuals, programs, and institutions through engagement with local experts, hands-on training, and real world scenarios.
Over the course of an intensive “sprint” weekend, participants will learn in an immersive environment how to recognize particular needs and then build, innovate, and apply physically inclusive and culturally sensitive practices to foster active bodies across a wide range of career fields. This program offers a unique interdisciplinary focus intended to launch students into new approaches and be more effective in multiple career paths.
This program runs full-time, Friday to Sunday. Participants must be able to commit to the entire weekend.
Participants will gain an awareness of diverse bodies and the physical, social/cultural, and emotional factors that shape how different bodies participate in physical activity.
Participants will learn hands-on techniques and structures for creating effective engagement and support for a diversity of individuals involved in active body pursuits.
Students will learn to apply skills for developing effective communication and questioning around inclusivity for diverse active bodies.
Students will engage in critical reflection about how these skills might be ethically put into practice in real-world situations and career opportunities.
