To post a job on Handshake:
1. Start by clicking Post a Job from your home dashboard:
You will now be asked to complete 4 steps: Job Basics, Job Details, Job Preferences, and Schools to post the job to. You don’t have to fill out every field to create your job – required inputs will be identified with an asterisk (*).
2. Job Basics:
- Job Title
- Require students to apply through an external website or applicant tracking system? If you select “yes” for this option, you’ll be able to enter a website address – for example, if you want applicants to also complete a Google Form. Students would still apply through Handshake first, but they would then see your link at the end of the process.
- Display your contact information to students? Select Name and Email.
- Job Type. Select On Campus Student Employment
- Employment Type. Select Part-time.
- Duration. Select Temporary / Seasonal. You will then see an option to enter start and end dates for the position. These fields are optional.
- Work Study Job? Select No. (Student records in Handshake don’t indicate which students are eligible.)
- Click Next at the bottom of the page.
- Description. You can copy and paste a description or type directly in the box.
- Job Functions. Select at least one option in the drop-down.
- Job Salary can be left empty or you can fill in the current student work rate.
- Location. For jobs on campus, enter 1520 St. Olaf Avenue, Northfield, MN. For jobs off campus, enter the physical address of the work location.
- Required documents. If you will require documents as part of the application, select those here. It’s OK to leave these all unchecked. If you ask students to complete and upload a specific application form, mark Other Document. You’ll be able to attach a blank copy of your application to the position at the end of this process.
- Click Next.
- Note – All students can apply to any position in Handshake, but a student who doesn’t meet your job preferences will see a message next to your posting indicating that he/she doesn’t meet all the preferences and you will be able to sort candidates by these criteria.
- Graduation date range and School Year are optional.
- Minimum GPA. We recommend leaving this blank.
- Majors. We recommend leaving this blank. If you’d like to select St. Olaf majors, scroll past the check boxes of major categories (Arts and Design, etc.) to the link for specific majors by individual school. Select St. Olaf and then check the majors you’d like.
- Applicant Packages, By default, your own name will appear here. You can control when you are notified about new applicants. If you’d like to add another name and email address to receive notifications, click into the “Add some else…” box. If that person has not yet logged into Handshake, he or she will need to create an account first.
- Click Next.
- Note: Handshake allows employers to post opportunities to multiple schools. You’re only posting to St. Olaf students, but you’ll still need to indicate that on this screen.
- Choose St. Olaf College on the left.
- Apply start date defaults to today’s date but can be edited to a future date/time.
- Expiration date defaults to 30 days from the start date but can be edited to any future date/time.
- Click the green Create button to save your posting. You’ll now see a summary of your pending position.
6. Attachments.
If you’d like to add an attachment (Word or .pdf) to your posting, scroll down to the blue New Attachment button at the bottom of your screen. Students will see this attachment at the bottom of your job posting. You may wish to add text in your job description to be sure that students notice your attachment.
7. Approval.
Your position is now complete pending approval. The St. Olaf Student Employment Office will review your posting and approve it or contact you if there are questions. (Should we add a time frame here to set expectations?)
