The Smith Center for Global Engagement provides opportunities for students to expand their learning in the liberal arts, not only through experiences around the globe but also through engagement with local communities within the U.S. Study abroad/away programs are offered during January Term, fall semester, spring semester, and during an academic year. There is an application process for each of these programs and courses. Semester and year programs tend to remain the same from year to year, with minor changes. January Term programs can differ, depending on faculty availability, budgets, and programming.
The Department of Classics offers a faculty-led program every January Term, alternating between Greece and Italy.
If students are interested in a semester program with emphasis on classical studies or medieval studies, they are encouraged to consider the following:
- College Year in Athens (CYA)
- Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies (CMRS) Oxford Humanities Program
Another popular option is participation in archaeological fieldwork during the summer:
Smith Center programs can be viewed on the application database. Single searches and more advanced searches can be done to find a program within a student’s area of study and interest. For more information attend a 101 Session: Intro to Study Abroad/Away or program info session (see Smith Center Events for more details), meet with a Peer Advisor, and visit the Smith Center webpage for program costs, application instructions, and additional information.
