About NorskBo

The Norwegian Residential Learning Community, or “NorskBo,” is an inclusive residential community of Norwegian language students who are committed to speaking Norwegian together and engaging in critical discussions of Norwegian and Nordic Studies. In collaboration with the Norwegian Department, NorskBo residents promote Norwegian language and culture throughout the broader college community by planning, advertising, and hosting weekly events related to Norway and the Nordic region. These events are designed both to promote more Norwegian language use among students and to foster awareness and critical discussions of inclusion and equity in the Nordic region. Previous examples of events include a velkomstfest (welcome party) with vafler (Norwegian waffles), screenings of contemporary TV shows and films, lectures on Sámi language and culture, Norwegian game nights, and the telling of traditional Norwegian folktales.
The students living in the Norwegian House have two main goals: 1) to create a Norwegian environment in the house by speaking Norwegian on a regular basis and incorporating Norwegian culture into their daily routine, and 2) to organize a variety of co-curricular activities for St. Olaf students as well as larger public events for the entire Northfield community. The Norwegian House co-sponsors many of its activities with the on-campus Norwegian Club. See the photo galleries below.
Applications
Applications for NorskBo open early in the spring semester for the following academic year and are evaluated by the Norwegian Department. Preference is given to students who have shown a strong commitment to Norwegian and Nordic studies, are in good academic standing, and can contribute positively to creating a welcoming/inclusive learning community.
Please address any questions about NorskBo to the faculty liaison in the Norwegian Department.
