This course examines gender and sexuality in the Nordic countries through the lens of literature written by women. Students will study
novels, short stories, and essays from the nineteenth century until today and cover a variety of prose genres such as femi-crime, dystopia, sci-fi, magical realism, gothic novella and historical realism. Films and theoretical texts that explore issues of gendered identities will supplement the readings. Additionally students will examine the historical, social, and political contexts of this literature and learn how it has played an important role in effecting social and political change.
